Paleoclimatic reconstruction using Mutual Climatic Range on terrestrial mollusks

چکیده
Terrestrial mollusks, easily identified in Quaternary sediments, represent a reliable tool for quantitative estimates of environmental parameters. Our study, comparing the species distribution with meteorological parameters in Europe, shows that mean temperature of the coldest month and annual thermal magnitude are the most important forcing parameters. This survey allows us to adapt the Mutual Climatic Range (MCR) method to terrestrial mollusk assemblages following two main steps. A set of assemblages from different European regions (northern Norway to southern France) is used to apply the method on present day mollusks. The reconstructed values describe the latitudinal temperature gradient prevailing over Europe. However, the comparison between the reconstructed and the measured values indicates a shift, similar to that observed, with the same method applied on beetle assemblages. Thus, estimates must be calculated after tuning the reconstruction with the observations. The results from the modern mollusk assemblages indicate that the MCR method can be safely applied to reconstruct temperatures from terrestrial mollusk assemblages in any worldwide Quaternary sequence. A trial application is made on Late Pleistocene assemblages from Achenheim

Late Miocene–Pliocene Paleoclimatic Evolution Documented by Terrestrial Mollusk Populations in the Western Chinese Loess Plateau
The Neogene eolian deposits in the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) are one of the most useful continental deposits for understanding climatic changes. To decipher Late Neogene paleoclimatic changes in the CLP, we present a terrestrial mollusk record spanning the time interval between 7.1 and 3.5 Ma from the western CLP. The results indicate four stages of paleoclimatic evolution: From 7.1 to 6.2 Ma...
متن کاملGEOLOGICAL NOTE Global Aridity during the Early Miocene? A Terrestrial Paleoclimate Record from the Ebro Basin, Spain
Paleosols are an important tool in the paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental interpretation of continental deposits and can provide a high-resolution proxy for paleoclimate. Results from geochemical climofunctions applied to Early Miocene strata exposed in the Ebro Basin, Spain, demonstrate that mean annual precipitation was the dominant control on paleosol type and indicate that the paleoclimat...
متن کاملDo red beds indicate paleoclimatic conditions?: A Permian case study
Terrestrial red beds have long been interpreted as desert deposits by comparison with modern red deserts. More recently red beds have been interpreted as evidence of seasonally dry conditions and a Permo–Triassic Pangean monsoon. Red beds of Cala Viola, Sardinia are identified as paleosols and used to reconstruct Late Permian paleoclimatic conditions. Reconstruction of paleoenvironmental condit...
متن کاملQuantitative estimation of bioclimatic parameters from presence/absence vegetation data in North America by the modern analog technique
The method of modern analogs is widely used to obtain estimates of past climatic conditions from paleobiological assemblages, and despite its frequent use, this method involved so-far untested assumptions. We applied four analog approaches to a continental-scale set of bioclimatic and plantdistribution presence/absence data for North America to assess how well this method works under near-optim...
متن کاملD/H variation in terrestrial lipids from Santa Barbara Basin over the past 1400years: A preliminary assessment of paleoclimatic relevance
We analyzed D/H ratios of common terrestrial leaf wax lipids in a 1400 year sediment core from the Santa Barbara Basin (SBB) to test whether they accurately record terrestrial climate in Southern California. The D/H ratios of long chain n-alkanes vary substantially with depth, but are poorly correlated with other terrestrial climate proxies. Interference from fossil hydrocarbons may be at least...
